Blogs

Blog is a contraction of 'web log' and can be likened to an online journal or a personal website. The author of the blog, or the blogger, regularly updates the website with postings that usually appear in reverse chronological order. Blogs can take the form of a personal diary or can involve commentary on a specific topic such as politics or technology and can also be used as part of a corporate website.

History of Blogs

Blogs began as online diaries or updated websites of links in the early 1990s. As a new technology, early blogs were created by those with greater technical knowledge and were often associated with technological or academic institutions. However, the arrival of blog hosting websites such as Blogger and LiveJournal in the late 1990s made blogging more accessible to a larger, less technical audience. Since then the blogosphere has exploded, with some people estimating that there are more than 100 million blogs in existence.

Impact of Blogs

The impact of blogs is increased by the fact that they are highly networked and quickly indexed by search engines. This means that any flattering or negative comments about a product or brand has the ability to reach the large number of people who search for that product or brand. Also, regular readers of blogs are likely to have their purchase decisions influenced by what they read on trusted and relevant blogs.
